Murky Grave by CalamityChemist Murky Grave by CalamityChemist
Finally, some character art up in here. :>

I decided to do a portrait of Carmori beneath the surface of the river that drowned him. He returns occasionally to reminisce and mourn his own death among the murky water and weeds--which were the last things he saw with living eyes.

I love water scenes, and this was a fun practice in mood. c: Kind of a solemn fellow, here--though if I were strolling among waterweeds in dark river, I expect I'd be solemn, too.

Pencil lines + digital color. I hope you like it!

I just wondered if it's a specific name for the type of mask he is wearing?
Wonderful drawing. <3

I don't think there's a specific name for it--it's just a variation I did on a classical masquerade-style bird mask. c: And thank you!

Wow, this is fascinating. I love his expression very much, and what you've described of this fellow in the comments makes him sound quite fascinating. Also, he resembles a plague doctor, and, in my mind, this is very good.

You succeeded very well, mood-wise, and I love the effect of the pencil lines and digital color. It's fabulous.

This is, indeed, quite murky, and I am enjoying the murkiness of it very much. He does look like he is in mourning, and like there are very few beams of sunshine in his life (proverbially or otherwise) . . . Or afterlife, rather, he he.

Thank you! <3 I was hoping that it would have that effect--sometimes 'mourning' doesn't come across well without being overblown, haha. I'm glad you like it!

Thank you! His death is a main point in his story, so a lot of the art I do of him involves it. c:

Does it involve him dying all the time?

Oh, not technically, no. He's a ghost! So while he's dead in all the artwork I do of him, it's because his story takes place after he has died.

The textures that you use are great! They really give the water that murky, muddy look. Poor Carmori, he looks like he needs a hug!

FFFF THANK YOU  YEARS OF TRAINING JUST TO DRAW THEM WEEDS.
lol kidding.

Thanks so much! I'm glad you like the effect. c: And Carmori drowned after falling off of a boat. He had a safety line, but it ended up just dragging him across the bottom of the boat. By the time they noticed he was missing and dragged him back up, he was dead as a doornail. :I

BTW, I've always wanted to ask...was he at a masqerade ball at the time or something? I've always wondered where the mask came from per say...
