The Girl and the Greybird by CalamityChemist The Girl and the Greybird by CalamityChemist
Edit: 'Greybird' is no longer a collaboration, but a solo project of mine. :>

--

Finally done with this! School made me put my art off so much, haha.

This is a poster-style illustration for ‘Greybird’, the novel I’m writing along with *Kocoa. In a nutshell, it’s the story of a shut-in woman in 1904 London, who encounters the bereaved ghost of an actor—and both find themselves thrown into turmoil by the consequences of their relationship, both of this world and the next.

I took a different approach with the lines and coloring in this illustration (pencil lines with digital color), and definitely enjoyed doing some manual texture work and painting in finer details on the feathers. The coloring helped to enhance the spooky ‘feel’ of the story I was trying to portray, and I might try to do more pictures this way in the future.

(If you’re wondering, the woman is Lorna and the bird-monster behind her is Carmori—just in a form you might not recognize!)

I hope you enjoy it!

Lorna belongs to *Kocoa
Art and Carmori belong to me (*CalamityChemist)

I could see like Tim Burton making a movie based off this pic. Reminds me of the corpse bride or nightmare before christmas

That's exactly what came to mind when I saw this pic. It looks like a Tim Burton film of some sorts.

I just realized it's been a while since you've uploaded this, but how is the novel coming along? Is it already available somewhere? I love anything that's set in early 20th century (and 19th century xD). The story sounds intriguing!
And so is the drawing! I love the use of different textures.
Also, agree with ElizabethGreene, your work totally reminds me of Tim Burton. :)

The novel is coming along fine! It's actually my solo project now, so girl 'Lorna' isn't part of it anymore, but it follows the original storyline still. I'll be completing more art regarding it. :> The novel isn't available right now, but I might post some segments of it here sometime!
And aww, thank you. I'm glad you like how it turned out. C:

Something I absolutely adore about this is how you shaded and highlighted this. Nothing's too dramatic, yet I can still see what's going on. Most of all, you used a gradient-type technique, what with how the shadows get darker the lower you go. It's something I learned about only recently, with how light actually acts on all objects, and makes the lighting much more realistic.

Actually, you seem to be really good at that in general.

Very beautiful in its own dark way, and I look forward to reading yours and *Kocoa's novel some time in the future. :]

Ah man, this comment just made my whole night. <3 Thank you so much, that's really kind of you to say. I'm definitely still learning (a lot), trying to balance between realistic and stylized, but it's great to hear that what I've worked on so far looks nice. c: Thanks again.

Carmori's story/Greybird is my own solo project now, but plans for it to be completed and published are still on-track. :>

Another great piece, no doubt.

Love the soft look of the feathers and the view point. it's very hard to make a scene with both characters facing forward and not make it look flat, but here you manage to do it perfectly! I'm totally watching you, 'cause i can't wait to see more of your awesome works ; )

I ACTUALLY, for practice, DID start drawing Lian, the male-player-choice protaganist of THIS&THAT, looking out from a mirror at Carmori...the reason it's not finished yet, however, is because I'm STILL looking for a proper hade of grey for Carmori's vest...

HOW HARD IS IT TO FIND GREY CRAYON IN A GIANT BIN OF CRAYONS?!? I MEAN...DUDE C'MOOOOOON!!!
